After many delays, the much awaited Suriya starrer Kanguva has finally hit the theaters today. With sky high expectations surrounding this periodic fantasy action spectacle, does Kanguva live up to the hype? Let’s dive into the review to find out!

Story:

The movie opens with intense scientific research on children’s brains. A boy named zeta escapes from the research center and ends up with a man named Franchis (played by Suriya). Franchis, who secretly works with the police to capture criminals they cannot catch, is on a mission when he accidentally kills a notorious criminal jittu. The only witness to the incident is zeta, the boy doesn’t speak but silently watches Franchis.

Franchis, feeling responsible, takes zeta with him to a hotel. While there, zeta begins to draw images that reveal fragments of Kanguva’s past. This triggers vivid flashes in Franchis’s mind, revealing his previous life as Kanguva (also played by Suriya). Kanguva’s timeline unfolds alongside Franchis’s, showing both characters forming an unexpected bond with zeta under different circumstances.

The story spans two timelines: Franchis’s modern day world and Kanguva’s ancient past. Both characters, though separated by time, are connected to the same boy. As the plot progresses, the mystery deepens who are the people behind the experiments on zeta, and what do they want from him? Who is Kanguva, and what’s his emotional connection to the kid? You have to watch it in theatres!

Performance:

Suriya delivered a phenomenal performance in dual roles, excelling as both Franchis and Kanguva. His portrayal brought depth and intensity to both characters. The young boy who played zeta also did a decent job, complementing Suriya’s performance well. However, Disha Patani’s character felt a bit irritating, although her limited screen time was a relief. Bobby Deol impressed as Rudhira in the ancient period, adding strength to the story. A special cameo by Karthi at the end, appearing in both timelines, was a standout moment that left a lasting impression.

Analysis:

The movie starts off on an interesting note, creating anticipation. However, once Franchis is introduced and the comedic scenes with Yogi Babu and Disha Patani unfold, the narrative falters. The comedy fails to land and instead becomes frustrating, testing the audience’s patience. Thankfully, the introduction of Kanguva brings some much needed energy to the film, with an emotional storyline that draws attention but struggles to make a deep emotional connection with the viewer, which turns out to be the film’s main flaw.

In the latter half, there are a few standout moments that offer relief, such as well-executed action sequences and certain scenes that capture attention, like the drawing of Kanguva by the kid. Despite these moments, the overall impact is diluted, leaving viewers wanting more. The climax, while rushed, is saved by an exciting cameo from Karthi, which adds some thrill to the ending. Ultimately, although the film has its highlights, the lack of emotional depth and inconsistent pacing make for a less satisfying experience overall.

Positives:

• Suriya’s extraordinary performance

• Impressive visuals

• Karthi’s impressive cameo

Negatives:

• Predictable plot

• Irritating comedy

• Emotional disconnect

Verdict:

If you’re a Suriya fan, you’ll definitely enjoy the movie as he delivers yet another commendable performance. For general audiences, the film offers impressive visuals and Suriya’s strong presence, making it worth a watch. However, despite these strengths, the movie fails to meet expectations and ultimately remains an average product overall.
