The Conjuring: Last Rites Review – A Weak Farewell to a Legendary Franchise

The Conjuring: Last Rites is the fourth film in the Conjuring series and the 11th movie in the whole Conjuring universe. It was promoted as the final case of Ed and Lorraine Warren. Released on September 5 in multiple languages, fans expected a powerful horror ride. But sadly, this turned out to be the most disappointing and weakest film in the franchise.

Story

The movie starts in 1956, where Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) sees a frightening vision linked to her unborn daughter Judy. then story Jump to 1986, the Smurl family moves into a new house in Pennsylvania. A mirror gifted for a birthday becomes the source of scary happenings. Soon, the family faces terrifying problems, Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine, with help from their daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson), try to save them. how the Warrens close this case is what the story is about.

Analysis

The film begins with some promise. Lorraine’s vision and the early spooky scenes in the Smurl house are decent. The Annabelle doll also appears for a short moment, which is the best horror scene in the movie.

But after that, the film becomes dull. The first half moves very slowly, as the Warrens take too long to join the case. The horror scenes feel repeated from older Conjuring film faces in mirrors, shadows, strange noises but none of them are scary anymore. The climax feels rushed, leaving many questions unanswered. Also, the Smurl family, who seem important at first, almost disappear in the second half, making the story feel incomplete.

On the positive side, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson again perform really well as the Warrens. Their emotional chemistry is the heart of the film. Judy’s role is also good. Technically, the movie looks fine sets, sound, and visuals are good but the weak story and lack of strong scares spoil everything.

Verdict

The Conjuring: Last Rites fails to give a strong ending to this famous franchise. Instead of a scary and emotional farewell, it feels like a weak copy of older Conjuring films. Fans expecting something on the level of The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 will definitely be disappointed.
