LIK Review: Love vs Technology

After delivering three consecutive 100 crore films like Love Today, Dragon, and Dude, Pradeep Ranganathan has emerged as a Gen Z superstar. With Love Today, he also gained strong recognition among Telugu viewers and has been releasing his films in Telugu as well. Now, under the direction of Vignesh Shivan, he comes up with Love Insurance Company, starring Krithi Shetty as the female lead. The team actively promoted the film in Telugu too, which created decent buzz around it.The film released on April 10, clashing with Dacoit. So, how is the movie? Let’s find out in this review.

Story

The story is set in the year 2040 in Chennai. In this world, an app called “LIK” (Love Insurance kompany), developed by S. J. Suryah, takes control over the youth. What starts as an idea of “insurance for love” slowly begins to influence and control people’s thoughts, even deciding whom to love and whom to break up with.

Vibe Vassey (Pradeep Ranganathan), who comes from a family that runs a rehabilitation center to help people stay away from phone addiction, lives a life far from technology. On the other hand, Dheema (Krithi Shetty) is a social media influencer who is always glued to her phone.

Despite being complete opposites, Vassey falls in love with Dheema at first sight. But how did someone who stays away from phones fall for someone who cannot live without one? How does the LIK app come in between their love story? And do they manage to overcome it or not? The rest of the story answers these questions.

Performance

Pradeep Ranganathan once again impresses in his usual style. He shines in a role that suits him well and single handedly carries the film. His screen presence is superb and whenever he is on screen, he keeps you engaged.

S. J. Suryah also does a good job in a role that feels familiar to him and delivers an engaging performance.

Krithi Shetty is okay in her role. However, her look feels inconsistent in some scenes, possibly due to makeup, which could have been handled better. Seeman and the rest of the supporting cast perform well within their roles and support the story.

Analysis

The movie starts in 2040 Chennai and quickly grabs your attention. The introduction of the characters is done well, and as each character comes in, the film slowly becomes more interesting. Things get better when Vibe Vassey falls in love with Dheema at first sight, and their journey together works well. Even though a few scenes feel a bit over the top, the film still manages to keep you engaged. The interval, set around the idea of love versus the app, is interesting.

In the second half, the story mainly focuses on the face off between Pradeep Ranganathan and S. J. Suryah. This part keeps things engaging to an extent and also brings some good laughs, especially through Yogi Babu’s comedy.

The core idea of technology controlling human emotions is very interesting and has a lot of scope. There has always been a thought that technology might one day start controlling people, and the director seems to have taken that idea and built the story around it. However, the director does not fully utilise this strong concept, which becomes a major drawback.

A special mention to Anirudh Ravichander. His background score and songs make the film very pleasant to watch, and his music adds a strong impact to many scenes. It feels good to experience that kind of Anirudh magic again.

Verdict

A fresh and interesting concept backed by engaging moments, good performances, and strong music by Anirudh Ravichander makes the film an enjoyable watch. Even though it does not fully explore its potential, it still manages to entertain and connect in parts.
