Performance
Rahman as CI Aji Kurian is the backbone of the entire series. His portrayal of an investigator which is very complicated yet powerful, making you think a lot. He portrays in complete balance a policeman who has his heart set on solving the murders and Struggling with the tough choices in the case. Emotion is written all over Sarah Ouseph’s character as she acts out a mother undergoing the torture of what has happened in her life. Bibin’s character carries with it that slow and decline into chaos. telling through subtle changes in his behaviour. Second lead support is decent, though could have been upped a few notches in some key roles.
Positives :
Suspenseful first 3 episodes.
Atmospheric cinematography.
Interesting backstory of Sarah
Negatives :
Slow pacing in the later episodes.
Unnecessary subplots.
Miscast supporting roles.
Analysis
1000 Babies starts off on a really promising premise and holds the first half of the series to be quite nail-biting. The whole psychological tension of the story and an important part related to crime investigation keep you glued to the subject. However, there is too much dragging the extraneous subplots which have little to do with the mystery that captivated you from the very start. For instance, the incorporation of the social issues, such as political and religious bigotry, is awkward and takes away from the central storyline. However, the acting of Rahman and the cold cinematography help to keep the series together, and it is unnerving and suspenseful.
Verdict
1000 Babies is a gripping crime thriller with very strong performances and an interesting plot, but the pacing issues and subplots in the latter episodes are where this hurts as a whole. Seen through the first couple of episodes and especially Rahman’s performance, it could have been well written
